Indianapolis, Indiana: March 7, 2011 - Geothermal is the most efficient way to heat and cool your home. Your monthly operating costs will be so low, you won't mind receiving your utility bill. If you live in a house you plan to stay in for a while, you absolutely should seriously consider a geothermal system. [Read Geothermal Heating and Cooling for information about how a geothermal system works.] Comparing Traditional to Geothermal Installations
But that's still only 1 out of every 50 homes that "goes geo." The problem is, many people have misconceptions or misinformation about geothermal systems that keep them from taking advantage of the many benefits geothermal offers. Misconception # 1: Installation Requires a Nearby Lake, Pond or Large Piece of PropertyIf you are at all familiar with geothermal, you may know someone that lives on a lake and has geothermal system installed. But you don't live on a lake, and therefore haven't considered geothermal as an option.
Misconception # 2: Installation Will Tear Up My Yard
This is no longer true. Today, it is minimally invasive to have geothermal installed in a wide variety of location types.
For example, we recently installed a geothermal system in a home near Butler University. If you're familiar with that area of Indianapolis, you know that homes have postage stamp sized yards there.
Misconception # 3: It's Way Too Expensive! There is nothing else you can do to better lower your utility costs than to replace the one component in your house that uses the most energy, and that's your heat / air conditioning system. While it is true that the up-front cost cost for a geothermal system will be usually be higher than for traditional HVAC equipment, afterwards your home will have a money-saving geothermal system for years to come.
For 2011, the Federal Government is offering a 30% tax credit, with no cap on the limit, for the purchase of a new geothermal system. This is a huge, unprecedented incentive, unlike anything I've ever seen in over 20 years in the business. Additional incentives, such as up to a $1,000 rebate from our equipment partner Rheem, and rebates from local utility companies, can save you even more. With the tax credit and other incentives to help pay for a large portion of the cost, you should see a return on your investment in just a few short years. [Read
