Misconceptions About Geothermal Heating and Cooling
by John Traub, President of Thiele Heating & Air Conditioning

Geothermal Heating and Cooling: Thiele Heating & Air Conditioning, Indianapolis, Indiana

Indianapolis, Indiana: March 7, 2011 - Geothermal is the most efficient way to heat and cool your home. Your monthly operating costs will be so low, you won't mind receiving your utility bill. If you live in a house you plan to stay in for a while, you absolutely should seriously consider a geothermal system.

[Read Geothermal Heating and Cooling for information about how a geothermal system works.]

Comparing Traditional to Geothermal Installations

  • Five years ago, only about 1 of every 500 heating and cooling systems we installed was geothermal.

  • Today, we install around 10 times as many geothermal systems.

But that's still only 1 out of every 50 homes that "goes geo." The problem is, many people have misconceptions or misinformation about geothermal systems that keep them from taking advantage of the many benefits geothermal offers.

Misconception # 1: Installation Requires a Nearby Lake, Pond or Large Piece of Property

If you are at all familiar with geothermal, you may know someone that lives on a lake and has geothermal system installed. But you don't live on a lake, and therefore haven't considered geothermal as an option.

  • It's true that in the past installation of the "Loop" system required a lot of open area, either placing it at the bottom of a lake or pond, or digging large trenches to bury them in.

  • Today's technology makes geothermal installations much easier and less invasive then they used to be.

Misconception # 2: Installation Will Tear Up My Yard

Today's installation equipment is capable of both vertical and steep-angle geothermal loop installations in a small area, with a minimal amount of damage to surrounding grounds.

This is no longer true. Today, it is minimally invasive to have geothermal installed in a wide variety of location types.

  • We can install a “Loop” system within a very small patch of a yard, as small as 4' x 4', that might need to be reseeded. It's a much simpler, easier, streamlined process.

  • Rather than placing the loops horizontally across a wide area of ground, loops can be run straight down, or even angled to run right under an existing crawlspace.

For example, we recently installed a geothermal system in a home near Butler University. If you're familiar with that area of Indianapolis, you know that homes have postage stamp sized yards there.

  • Even five years ago, geothermal was used mostly on farms or other large properties, or at homes with huge yards or had a pond or lake on the property.

  • Now, we can install one for a “zero lot line” condo if we need to, as the restrictions today are minimal.

Misconception # 3: It's Way Too Expensive!

There is nothing else you can do to better lower your utility costs than to replace the one component in your house that uses the most energy, and that's your heat / air conditioning system.

While it is true that the up-front cost cost for a geothermal system will be usually be higher than for traditional HVAC equipment, afterwards your home will have a money-saving geothermal system for years to come.

  • The majority of the additional cost is for the installation of the loop.

  • The rest of the system is similar to a standard heat pump or central AC unit.

  • In the future, only the mechanical equipment might need to be replaced, not the loops.

For 2011, the Federal Government is offering a 30% tax credit, with no cap on the limit, for the purchase of a new geothermal system. This is a huge, unprecedented incentive, unlike anything I've ever seen in over 20 years in the business.

Additional incentives, such as up to a $1,000 rebate from our equipment partner Rheem, and rebates from local utility companies, can save you even more. With the tax credit and other incentives to help pay for a large portion of the cost, you should see a return on your investment in just a few short years.

[Read Tax Credits and Rebates for HVAC and Water Heating Replacement Costs in 2011 for more information about the various incentives currently available.]

Give us a call today and have a Thiele “Comfort Consultant” evaluate your current system, analyze your usage history, and help you decide whether or not we have a product that, at your particular location, can save you a considerable amount of money on your utility bills.

If we cannot find a way to save you money with a geothermal system, it still costs you nothing to have us come out. It might even help you to plan and budget for the future, if you're not ready to purchase new equipment right now. When you are ready, at least you will have some idea of your options and the related investment required.
